Syndee Winters, a celebrated Broadway star and rising jazz vocalist, is set to release a tribute album titled 'Syndee Winters Sings Lena Horne' on June 30, marking what would have been Lena Horne's 108th birthday. The album, distributed worldwide by The Orchard/Sony Music, is a 10-track homage to Horne, an icon known for her contributions as a singer, actress, and activist. Winters, the 2024 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition 1st Runner-Up, brings a unique blend of Broadway polish and deep jazz roots to this project, executive produced by Eulis Cathey and associate produced by Carl Griffin.
Featuring classic selections like 'Stormy Weather' and 'If You Believe,' the album reimagines Horne's timeless pieces with grace and soul. It also includes 'Alive,' an original composition by Andromeda Turre, which serves as a spiritual companion to Horne's defiant artistry, exploring resilience in the face of personal storms. The project boasts collaborations with renowned jazz musicians such as Michael Eckroth, Freddie Hendrix, and Warren Wolf, among others, showcasing Winters' vocal control and interpretive nuance.
Winters, known for her roles in 'Hamilton,' 'Motown,' and 'The Lion King' on Broadway, as well as performances with the LA Philharmonic and Boston Pops, brings a cultural dimension to this tribute. As a Caribbean American artist, she embodies the legacy Horne stood for: elegance, excellence, and evolution. Winters' live performances, including appearances at LACMA's Jazz Fridays Series and the NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison's Second Annual Quantum Leap Music Festival, further highlight her as a vital new voice in the lineage of great vocalists.
The album 'Syndee Winters Sings Lena Horne' is not just a musical project but a personal and historic journey for Winters, who credits Horne with helping her believe in her own voice. This summer, elegance indeed has a new soundtrack, as Winters breathes new life into jazz standards, ensuring the legacy of Lena Horne lives on. The album's release through The Orchard/Sony Music ensures global distribution, making this tribute accessible to audiences worldwide who wish to experience Horne's enduring influence through Winters' contemporary interpretation.
