In a historic victory, democratic socialist Maurice 'Mo' Brown has claimed the Democratic nomination for New York State Assembly District 129, defeating incumbent Bill Magnarelli, who held the seat for 28 years. The win, secured by approximately 100 votes after counting mail-in ballots, is part of a national trend of progressive candidates unseating establishment figures.
Brown's campaign focused on declaring housing, healthcare, and education as human rights, challenging the influence of big money and corporate interests. The race drew significant outside spending, with DoorDash reportedly spending nearly $155,000 on ads to oppose Brown. Despite endorsements for Magnarelli from Governor Kathy Hochul and other establishment figures, Brown's grassroots movement prevailed.
Brown's victory was part of a broader 'Affordability Slate' organized by the Syracuse chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Jo Bennett also won her primary for Onondaga County Legislator, District 15, defeating an opponent with 24 years in office. Tammy Honeywell, another slate candidate, lost her race but emphasized the movement's growth. Bennett described the campaign as 'historic' and a clear message that communities prioritize human needs over corporate interests.
All three candidates received early endorsements from Syracuse DSA, the New York Working Families Party, and Citizen Action of New York. Brown later secured an endorsement from U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, a democratic socialist, which Brown called a full-circle moment given his start as a delegate for Sanders' presidential campaign.
Brown's platform included affordability, protecting immigrants from ICE, and banning data centers. He stated, 'The voters chose the priorities we ran on.' Looking ahead, Brown and Bennett will face Republican opponents in the general election on November 23. Both districts are heavily Democratic, making Brown's nomination a strong indicator of likely victory.
Syracuse DSA, established in 2018 and now a full chapter with hundreds of dues-paying members, focuses on mutual aid, international solidarity with Palestine, opposing ICE, and electing democratic socialists. Brown's win represents a significant milestone for the organization and the broader movement.
