NEW YORK, NY — Dr. Glen Gillen believes the most important part of healthcare can never be measured by a scan, contained in a medical chart, or replaced by technology. Before every diagnosis is a human being.
As a clinician, educator, researcher, and author, Dr. Gillen has helped thousands of stroke survivors regain independence, trained generations of occupational therapists, authored more than 200 scholarly publications and textbooks, and earned many of the profession's highest honors. Yet when asked what he hopes people remember most about his life's work, his answer is not found in a résumé.
That philosophy has guided Dr. Gillen as a clinician, educator, researcher, and mentor. Whether caring for patients in neurological rehabilitation or teaching future healthcare professionals at Columbia University, he has consistently emphasized that human connection is not separate from excellent medicine. It is fundamental to it.
"No one should ever feel reduced to a diagnosis, a medical chart, or a number," says Dr. Gillen. "Meaningful care begins the moment people feel seen, heard, respected, and understood. Every patient deserves to be an active participant in their own care."
Throughout his career, Dr. Gillen has encouraged a model of care that values partnership as much as professional expertise. Rather than placing clinicians above the individuals they serve, he advocates for an approach grounded in empathy, conversation, and mutual respect.

"Technology should enhance healthcare, never replace the human relationship at its center," Dr. Gillen explains. "Patients don't simply need answers. They need conversations. They need options. They need someone willing to listen before reaching for the prescription pad."
That commitment to humane, evidence-based care has earned him international recognition. Dr. Gillen has delivered hundreds of lectures throughout the United States and abroad, authored foundational textbooks used in occupational therapy programs around the world, and published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and scholarly works advancing neurological rehabilitation and evidence-based practice. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship, widely regarded as occupational therapy's highest academic distinction.
Although retired from Columbia University after 31 years of service, Dr. Gillen continues writing, speaking, and contributing to the profession that has defined his life's work. "My greatest hope is that the next generation of healthcare professionals never loses sight of the person sitting in front of them," says Dr. Gillen. "The best care is both clinically sound and deeply human. That is what makes it meaningful."
